Dr. Barry M. Zide graduated with honors in dentistry and medicine at the Tufts University Schools of Dental Medicine and Medicine. After doing his surgical residency at Stanford Medical Center, he completed a second residency in plastic surgery with the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at North Carolina Memorial Hospital. He completed fellowships in head and neck surgery and oncology at Roswell Park Memorial Institute (Buffalo, NY), in microsurgery at the Ralph K. Davies Medical Center, Franklin Hospital (San Francisco, CA) and in craniofacial surgery, Instructor Plastic Surgery, at the New York University Medical Center’s Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery (New York, NY). During his residencies, some of his most valued mentors were Harry Bunke, Jr., M.D., John Marquis Converse, M.D., and Joseph G. McCarthy, M.D.
Shortly after completing these residencies, he was appointed to Assistant Professor of Surgery with the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center (Charlottesville, VA), and later moved to New York University as Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery in 1981. He became Associate Professor in 1982 and full Professor in 1999. He holds appointments with Bellevue Hospital Center, Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, Beth Israel Medical Center North, and the Hospital for Joint Diseases, all in New York City.
Dr. Zide has extensive teaching experience with more than 200 presentations, courses and lectures delivered in national and international scientific meetings around the world. He has been a Visiting Professor at 15 universities including the Johns Hopkins Medical School (Baltimore, MD), the University of Miami (FL), the University of Illinois, the Georgetown University and the George Washington University (Washington, D.C.), and Yale University (New Haven, CT). His main research interests include clinical studies of Facial Disfigurement and Repair, as specifically related to vascular melanocytic growths and anatomic studies related to facial surgical techniques. Dr. Zide has published 2 books, contributed with chapters in 19 books and has published more than 100 papers in peer reviewed journals. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Annals of Plastic Surgery.
In addition to his academic credentials, Dr. Zide serves on numerous Academic and Professional Committees including Roswell Park Surgical Society, Womack Surgical Society, Converse Surgical Society, American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, New York County Medical Society, New York Regional Society of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons, American Society of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, International Society of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, Cleft Lip and Palate Society, Northwest Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Association of Plastic Surgeons.
